While reading these chapters, I wondered why Huck's father was so set on having full custody or full rights of him. I thought maybe it was because he wanted all of the money that Huck had, but that was given away. That is why I'm so confused on why he wanted to keep him so badly. I also wonder why the judge didn't just give the custody to the widow after he saw what kind of a man Huck's dad was.I am also confused on why Huck would rather be by himself in the woods, rather been be under a roof with food that is provided and clothes. Maybe we are just so accustomed to our ways now and for him he'd rather depend on himself and make his own rules.
Huck's dad was a foolish man, and he was very set in his own ways, and when he saw a free black man dressed like he was a rich white man, he was not very happy. He spoke about how the government isn't really a government if they let a free black man walk around like the white men and even to let him vote. I find this ignorant that a man is going to give up his privilege of voting just because a free black man can too. I feel like we have people like this still today. It may not be to this extent, but I'm sure that there are people who hate the government and refuse to vote just because of one little thing.
Out of these chapters, I really found some of the traditions and superstitions that they had very interesting. For example, if you touch a snake skin very bad luck will find you. I thought Jim was crazy for thinking this, but after he got bit by the snake (which was Huck's fault) he was laid up for some time. They also had a superstition that if you look at a new moon over your left shoulder that is bad luck as well (but not as bad as touching a snake skin). Huck new a man that did this once and bragged about it. He later got drunk and fell off the shot-tower. These seem so silly to me, but they actually caused bad luck for these people, but it does make me question if it was the superstitions or if it was their foolishness that caused these accidents.
